What are the pressure points of this issue? The gray area falls between publishers possessing total control over any image or word that they produce and letting anyone use any image they find online in anyway they’d like. The distinction between commercial use and fair use is important when trying to determine the legality of using an image on your blog/Web site.

So the main question is:

  • When can bloggers use images they find on Google images or other Web sites on their own blogs?

How can you use images you find on the Web on your blog?

If you do choose to use an image, link and attribute the image to the source. Do not alter the image from its original context.

A good resource on this is Creative Commons. Creative Commons works to establish “some rights reserved” with the goal “to build a layer of reasonable, flexible copyright in the face of increasingly restrictive default rules.” Here you can find more information about legal concepts such as the public domain and intellectual property. Also search case studies.

I’m extremely proud of one of my favorite photographers and good friend, Brian Cassella. Getting a shout out from Joe Maddon in an ESPN video.

In my quest for a balanced life, today I just wasn’t finding focus. So when a colleague mentioned that our mid-day yoga session was about to start, I saw it as a sign and joined them.

“The quiet, inactive times are as necessary as the active times.”

Something I perpetually struggle with. I yearn to always be busy and to never be alone (I’ve commonly referred to it as Jerry Maguire Syndrome). But I need to do a better job of embracing the quiet calmness that also presents itself. I feel like if I’m not being productive, I’m not living life to the fullest. But the inactive times can lead to a change in pace, which is sometimes needed to avoid getting in a rut and hydroplaning through life.

“When you feel resistance, ease up.”

Now, I don’t always agree that resistance is a sign that you should let up, but I do think that it is a sign that you should assess and see if a new perspective would change. Also, once you settle at the point of resistance for some time, you can push even further than you did before.

As we enter into the Libra time of the year, and because I am a Libra, the concept of balance has always been an relevant part of how I live my life. Last night at yoga, my instructor, Ruben, encouraged us to find the correct balance between overexertion and not being challenged in our exercises. I thought about this as it applies to my life and how I need to find the appropriate balance between competiting time committments like work and my time, time with others and time with myself. Like finding that perfect balance in yoga leaves you neither strained, nor feeling like you hadn’t done anything. I think finding that perfect balance in how you live your life can eliminate stress and at the same time challenge you.
