Leading a session on “When the News Finds You Through Social Media” at Kent State University’s Ethics conference, “What Values?”

A few of my thoughts on how online networks are creating a new news cycle. How are you seeing sites like Twitter, Facebook, etc. change the way you communicate?

This was one of my five useful things you can do by making a phone call or sending a text. I used this to demonstrate how you can set up a free Utterli account, make a phone call to the designated number, and post audio to your Twitter account, Facebook account, Web site or blog. See the original post to my Utterli account here.

I’ve just wrapped up my first week of classes in the part-time law program at Stetson University .

My main goal in my pursuit of a JD is to become a media lawyer. I want to build on the expertise I’ve been developing through my teaching and research on journalism innovations at Poynter. I’ve explained this more in my personal statement for my admission to Stetson.

My inspiration to do something like this stems from the issues I’m seeing in my research of journalistic uses of Twitter and Facebook. New challenges involving copyright, libel and privacy issues have come into the forefront as journalists use these tools to report and reach new audiences.

I’m going to use my blog to post media law challenges that come my way through tweets, phone calls, emails, blog posts. In no way am I going to attempt to give legal advice or anything. I just want to start tuning my personal radar to be better in tune to media law issues so one day, when I’m a lawyer, I can go back and see those very issues that inspired me to start down this path.
